Rising young mezzo-soprano Jennifer Feinstein has been likened by the Los Angeles Times to “a young Horne, so rich is her mezzo and so full of spark was she on stage.” The Santa Barbara Independentpraised her “remarkable, expressive voice reaching through the pain towards transcendence in a setting of Nietzsche’s ‘Midnight Song’,” and Opera News recently called her Elvira “a comic delight.”
Jennifer Feinstein is soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Caramoor Festival in summer 2015 and in the 2015-16 season sings the title role in Carmen in a return to St. Petersburg Opera (Florida); Maddalena in Rigoletto, Sofia in Moniuszko’s Halfa, and Olga inEugene Onegin, all with Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern; and Santuzza inCavalleria Rusticana at Theater Münster. Her 2014-15 season engagements included Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni with Opera Memphis; soloist in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” with the Richmond Symphony; and in Verdi’s Requiem with Waterbury Symphony Orchestra. Her 2013-14 engagements included singing as soloist in Mozart’s Requiem and Mendelssohn’s Die erste Walpurgisnacht with Oratorio Society of New York; with Fargo-Moorhead Opera’s Poe Project in the world premieres of Myers’Buried Alive and Soluri’s Embedded; with Symphoria (under Jose-Luis Novo) in Prokofiev’s “Alexander Nevsky”; with Richmond Symphony in Verdi’s Requiem; and as Adalgisa in Bellini’s Normawith St. Petersburg Opera .
Recent highlights include her debut with Sarasota Opera as Marchesa del Poggio in Verdi’s Un Giorno di Regno; soloist in John Cage’s “Solo for Voice No. 30” from Songbooks with the American Symphony Orchestra; Bach’s Magnificat (Sacred Music in a Sacred Place series at Church of St. Ignatius Loyola/ NYC); Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in a return to Glacier Symphony Orchestra and Chorale; Maddalena in Rigoletto with Lyric Opera of Baltimore, also in her debut with Opera Theater of Connecticut; and her Carnegie Hall debut and Opera Orchestra of New York debut in Adriana Lecouvreuras Madame Dangeville. Other successes include singing as Buttercup in HMS Pinafore with Opera New Jersey; soloist in a gala concert for “I Sing Beijing” (in China), founded by the Metropolitan Opera’s Hao Jiang Tian; and Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky (in Russian) with the Glacier Symphony and Chorale.
Other highlights include her Spoleto Festival (USA) debut in TheMedium as Mrs. Nolan; her European debuts at the Beethoven Easter Festival as Francisca in Donizetti’s Maria Padilla in Warsaw (recorded for release on the Naxos label), and with Orchestra Sinfonica di Giuseppe Verdi in Milan as Ruth Sherwood in Wonderful Town; appearing in Noel Coward’s Bittersweet at Bard’s SummerScape Music Festival; her return to Chautauqua Opera as a Studio Young Artist to perform the role of Lola in Cavalleria Rusticana and to Opera Theatre of St. Louis in her third season as a Gerdine Young Artist to cover Mrs. Segstrom in A Little Night Music, as well as appearing in the ensemble of the world premiere of The Golden Ticket.
She performed at Music Academy of the West in the role of Frederic in Mignon and in William Bolcom’s A Wedding (West Coast premiere) as Nettie Sloan and Aunt Bea; and made her concert debut as the alto soloist in Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with the Music Academy of the West Orchestra. She appeared with Yale Opera as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Carmen in La Tragédie de Carmen, Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro, and as the mezzo soloist in the Verdi Requiem.
Receiving both her Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, she was a Young Artist with the Indianapolis Opera for the 2007-2008 season, where she performed Third Lady in The Magic Flute, and covered Nicklausse in Les Contes d’Hoffmann. Ms. Feinstein was a Studio Artist with Chautauqua Opera in 2007, where she covered the role of Mercedes in Carmen. She has performed with Opera Theatre of St. Louis as Second Salvation Army Girl in Kurt Weill’s Street Scene, as well as covering Rosina in The Barber of Seville and Stephano inRomeo and Juliet. She has performed at Indiana University Opera Theater as Flora in La traviata, Martha in The Secret Garden, Mama McCourt in The Ballad of Baby Doe, Ilona Ritter in She Loves Me, the title role in La Cenerentola, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Katisha inThe Mikado, and Dame Doleful in Too Many Sopranos.
Jennifer Feinstein placed third in the 2012 Gerda Lissner Competition and was a national semi-finalist in Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions for 2010. She was a finalist in the National Opera Association, Jensen Foundation, Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship, semi-finalist in the Shreveport Opera Singer of the Year competition, and has been awarded Encouragement Awards from the Marilyn Horne Foundation Competition, Opera Index, and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Receiving both her Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music and a Master of Music from the Yale University School of Music, she was a Young Artist with the Indianapolis Opera.
