Alice ROSSI

SOPRANO

Alice Rossi is a soprano with a flexible, expressive and richly colored voice, widely recognized and esteemed for her baroque and contemporary repertoire. Since 2021, she has been a member of the Junges Ensemble at the Semperoper in Dresden, where she has performed Clorinda in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Adele in J. Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, and La Musica in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo.

At a young age, she learned the rudiments of harmony, rhythm and singing from her parents, both accomplished jazz musicians. In 2000 she began her formal classical music training with piano studies, and a few years later decided to devote herself to singing.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Music in 2014 and her Master’s in Pedagogy with Barbara Zanichelli in 2016 at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana (CSI) in Lugano. At the conclusion of her studies, she was selected as one of the conservatory’s top students and was given the privilege of performing with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana (OSI) under the direction of Enrico Dindo. In 2018 she completed a Master of Advanced Studies in Contemporary Music and Performance and Interpretation with renowned mezzo-soprano and contemporary music specialist Luisa Castellani. She is currently pursuing a Master in Opera at the Opernschule of the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart with Turid Karlsen.

She has taken part in numerous masterclasses to refine different types of repertoire, studying with major international artists such as Helmut Lachenmann, Mitsuko Shirai, Jennifer Larmore, Julius Drake, Katalin Karòly, Ioan Holender, Robert Holl, Elly Ameling and Helmuth Deutsch.

She made her operatic debut in 2013, singing the role of Lucia in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia with music director Arturo Tamayo at the Palazzo dei Congressi in Lugano. In 2014 she performed Songs By Myself and Nenia: The Death of Orpheus by Harrison Birtwistle at the Sir Harry’s Songs festival dedicated to the composer’s 80th birthday in Hannover, in collaboration with Das Neue Ensemble conducted by Stefan Asbury.

Her recent appearances as an interpreter of contemporary music include her 2025 Salzburg Festival debut as Lady Macbeth in Salvatore Sciarrino’s Macbeth with Klangforum Wien. In Udine she performed a solo recital dedicated to Berio, featuring Sequenza III and works by Cage and Castiglioni. In Klagenfurt she sang in Verdi’s Requiem conducted by Valerio Galli. At the 2025 Baden-Baden Festival she sang Clorinda in La Cenerentola under Hengelbrock. In January she returns to Salzburg for Mozartwoche 2026 to perform in Die Zauberflöte conducted by Roberto Gonzales-Monjas.

Her notable appearances include the Acht Brücken Festival in Cologne at the Kölner Philharmonie, where she performed Ligeti’s Aventures and Nouvelles Aventures; in 2019 she sang Antigone in Leo Dick’s Antigone-Tribunale at the Staatsoper Stuttgart-Nord and Hilda in Henze’s Elegie für junge Liebenden at the Wilhelma Theater in Stuttgart. She has premiered numerous contemporary works, such as Il Giardino della Vita by J. M. Sánchez Verdú in the role of the Angel at the Palazzo dei Congressi in Lugano, and the cycle Songs of the Holy Forest by H. Birtwistle at NDR Hannover.

She is also a sought-after interpreter of early and baroque music: she sang the role of the Queen in Caldara’s oratorio S. Giovanni Nepomuceno, in collaboration with La Divina Armonia conducted by Lorenzo Ghielmi for the Salzburger Bachgesellschaft; in 2017 she took part in the opening concert of the Early Music Festival in Utrecht at TivoliVredenburg, Grote Zaal, performing cantatas by Bach, Buxtehude and Lübeck; in 2018 she collaborated with the baroque ensemble Il Gardellino conducted by P. Van Heygen, and participated in the MAfestival in Bruges and the Musica Sacra festival in Maastricht, performing works by J. Mysliveček.

She has successfully participated in numerous competitions: she received 3rd Prize at the Cesti Baroque Opera Competition in Innsbruck (2015), 1st Prize from the Kiefer-Hablitzel Gesellschaft in Bern (2016); she received two special prizes—“Artisti della musica cosmopolita” and “Daniela Dessì”—at the Elsa Respighi Competition in Verona (2017); she won 3rd Prize at the Hilde Zadek Vocal Competition in Vienna (2017) and 3rd Prize at the S. Colombano Competition in Piacenza in both the Opera and Sacred Music categories (2020).
