CLARINET

Michele Marelli, winner of six editions of the Stockhausen Foundation Prize, has been awarded  Valentino Bucchi Prize in Roma, First Prize at the Penderecki Competition in Krakow, the Master of Musical Talents of the CRT Foundation, Honorary Logos Award in Belgium;  he was honored with the 2014 “Una vita nella musica” award by Teatro La Fenice in Venezia. A basset horn virtuoso, he is considered one of the best clarinet soloists of his generation for contemporary music.   Fundamental to his training was his meeting at the age of 18 with Karlheinz Stockhausen, with whom he established an artistic relationship for more than a decade: he was chosen by the composer as a soloist in his Ensemble, with whom he played numerous first performances and recorded three CDs.

A soloist for major international festivals including Berliner Philharmonie, Biennale di Venezia, Tanglewood Festival, Wiener Konzerthaus, Milano Musica, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Huddersfield Festival, Festival d’automne Paris, Ruhrtriennale, he has been invited to be part of the concert seasons of Teatro La Fenice, Théâtre de la Ville de Paris, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Teatro Manzoni in Bologna, Teatro Valli in Reggio Emilia, Maison de Radio France, WDR Grosse Sendesaal, Philharmonie Essen, Staatstheater Unter den Linden, Firenze Opera  ,  with major orchestras including Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, SWR Symphonie Orchester, Oslo Philharmonie, Orchestra Sinfonica del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Orchestra Sinfonica Giuseppe Verdi di Milano, Hilversum Filharmonik, Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra della Toscana, Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana.

A graduate in clarinet with honors from the Conservatory of Alessandria, a graduate in Modern Literature from the University of Turin, a graduate in Electronic Music from the Conservatory of Latina and a researcher in musicology at the University of Berlin, he had specialized in England with Alan Hacker, in Germany with Suzanne Stephens, and in France with Alain Damiens. He is currently a researcher at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. His composition teachers were Karlheinz Stockhausen, Vinko Globokar and Unsuk Chin.

He has collaborated with important composers, including Helmut Lachenmann, György Kurtàg, Ivan Fedele, Marco Stroppa, Vinko Globokar, Franco Donatoni, Sylvano Bussotti, Kaija Saariaho, Salvatore Sciarrino, playing premières composed for him.

His recordings for Decca Classics, Wergo, Stradivarius, Neos, Col Legno, Kairos, have won several awards including a Nomination at the International Classical Music Awards, had 5 Diapason, 5 stars from Musica, 5 stars from Amadeus.

He is first clarinet of Ensemble Klangforum Wien and Musikfabrik Köln.

He teaches clarinet at the Paganini Conservatory in Genova.
